The new ICS Food Bank opened for the first time on Monday, October 31, 2011, just in time to assist clients during the busy holiday season. ICS announced plans to build a 2,700-square-foot Food Bank building in 2010. We asked for your help in raising $200,000 to match a $150,000 challenge grant from The Wolslager Foundation, and because so many of you generously responded, we met that goal well ahead of schedule. The new ICS Food Bank building does more than replace our old cramped quarters of just 400 square feet. It dramatically increases our food storage and distribution capabilities to serve an ever-growing number of people who are turning to ICS for assistance. New refrigeration equipment in the Food Bank allows ICS to provide more nutritious food options for recipients, such as fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy, meats, and frozen foods, as well as provide education on healthy nutrition, budget friendly meals, and menu planning. Clients turning to the ICS Food Bank now have a comfortable, sheltered waiting area to escape the heat of summer and winter weather. In addition, the Kids' Corner provides our youngest visitors with a welcoming space, crayons, and books to look at while their parents shop. According to 2010 U.S. Census data, 23.5% of Tucsonans live at or below the federal poverty level. ICS gives out approximately 1,000 emergency food boxes each month and over 12,000 supplemental items to hungry families. On average, 50 to 70 individuals and families visit the Food Bank each day. These numbers show no signs of decreasing. Check out pictures from the evolution of the building here. Pictures from the Food Bank's first week are here. Your gift to the new ICS Food Bank building will help us better serve hungry families in our community. Through the generous support of almost 200 donors and friends, this wonderful new facility has gone from a dream on paper to a tangible part of our work and mission. We appreciate every gift made to our new building. There is still time to give a gift to the ICS Food Bank expansion! Donations are needed to help us finish furnishing the interior of the building, and any amount is appreciated. Gifts of $500 and above for the Food Bank building project will be recognized on a decorative donor tile wall on the new facility – a great way to honor someone special.
