Pen Pals

HELPING SENIORS AND
DISABLED INDIVIDUALS


 

Almost 20% of Pima County residents are seniors aged 65+, and over 40% of local seniors have disabilities.

ICS offers many programs that help these neighbors remain independent and retain dignity. Choose the one that best matches your interests.

 



Health Advocacy Program

Interviewer. Conduct home visits and evaluation for potential recipients. Minimum of one interview per month. Nursing or health care background a plus.

Health Advocacy Assistant. Provide health advocacy education, community resources and follow up for recipients. Licensed nurses or certified social workers needed. 1-2 hours once a week preferred but not required.

Mobile Meals

Drivers. Deliver meals one day a week. (11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.)

Substitute Drivers. On-call drivers to fill various routes when needed. Usually several times a month; more frequently in the summer.

Office. Answer phones, coordinate drivers, general office needs, typing and computer use at times. One day a week (9 a.m. - 1 p.m.).

Route Coordinators. Assist in coordinating drivers. Involves calling the volunteers and finding substitute drivers for a route. Up to 4-6 hours per month from home

Caregiving Services

Drivers. Provide transportation to doctors, pharmacies, banks and grocery stores. This is our most requested service. Assignments are usually 2 -3 hours, Mon - Fri. Flexible schedules allow you to decide your availability.

Office. Answer phones and help coordinate services. Computer skills a plus. Shifts available 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. or 12 p.m. - 4 p.m. once a week.

Telecare. Make reassurance calls to elderly or homebound. Refer any emergencies to office. Call once a month or more from home or our office 8 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Flexible Schedule.

"I am so happy to hear the joy at the other end of the phone when I make my Telecare calls. For many of these people, our calls may be the only contact of the day. Our calls play an important role in their safety and security, helping them to remain independent at home."

Friendly Phoning. Call a homebound neighbor. Calls are made from home. Flexible Schedule.

Friendly Visiting. Make visits to homebound, either in-home or an outing. Flexible Schedule.

"The neighbors I visit are lonely and isolated. They appreciate the opportunity to talk about how they are feeling or what they are going through with someone who just listens."

Caregiver Relief. Stay with recipient (no hands-on care) while caregiver does personal errands. Flexible Schedule.

Pen Pal social organizer. Assist in organizing periodic social events between the youth and the seniors.

Handy Helpers. Help with minor home repair and home projects. Flexible Schedule.

Business Helpers. Assist with opening mail, balancing checkbook, paying bills, organizing paperwork. Flexible Schedule.

Guardian Angel Installers. Install the new personal safety dialer units and instruct recipients and responders on their use. Minimum time commitment: 1 to 2 hours once a week. Flexible Schedule.

Card Makers: Organize a group to make birthday cards for seniors. Flexible Schedule.
