| How We Serve:
HEALTH
ADVOCACY
|
|
The ICS
Health Advocacy Program helps individuals navigate
the health care system as well as available community resources to help maintain
their independence.
|
This
program is coordinated by a staff Health Coordinator, an R.N. experienced in
home health and health advocacy. The
Health Advocacy volunteers, often retired medical and social service
professionals, provide
the link to ICS services such as Mobile Meals
or transportation, as well as other community resources.
The
Health Coordinator is also available for support to the community through workshops,
guidance in beginning faith-based health ministries, and networking on case
management issues.
This
exciting and innovative program received the Achievement Award in Innovation
from the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona
in 2006.

Success Stories
A 95-year-old woman,
referred by an ICS Caregiving Service volunteer, was hard of hearing and was
looking for resources to assist with phone service. Our Health Coordinator was
able to obtain equipment as a loaner through a state program.
A 73-year-old woman
was worried about a scheduled medical procedure and was unsuccessful in
contacting her doctor. Our Health Coordinator helped the woman understand the
procedure and convinced the doctor to postpone the procedure until after
arranging an office visit for the recipient to educate and address her concerns
prior to surgery.
