| How We Serve: SUCCESS STORIES | | ICS has a unique role in Pima County as a caring organization filling essential "gaps in services"- those needs that are not typically met elsewhere. We′d like to share a few of these stories here. | These are the kinds of stories we love to tell. A 56-year-old disabled man was unable to afford critical medications. Our Health Coordinator helped him obtain needed medications through our Emergency Assistance Program and connected him with pharmaceutical assistance programs for long-term needs. A disabled mother of two children, ages 5 and 14, came to ICS for housing assistance. Her disability check had been stolen from her mailbox and they were homeless, due to the time it takes to get a replacement check. We provided rent and utility deposits, so they could get into a new place to live. The mother plans to return to substitute teaching as soon as her health allows. From an elderly Mobile Meals recipient - "Your volunteers are a light in my morning. They make me want to get up and get dressed and get out. P.S. I′m gaining weight." "Teresa," a 78-year-old whose fixed income was already strained from medical expenses, came to ICS in a financial crisis. An unexpected surgery compounded the situation and she called ICS in tears. In a combined and compassionate effort, ICS staff and volunteers worked with Teresa, helping her to cover the $150 co-pay for the new surgery and providing a volunteer caregiver driver for transport to the hospital. Because of your support, ICS was able to help Teresa through this crisis. We wish her a very speedy recovery. On Nov. 29, 2006 a 33-year old man was discharged from the hospital. He had no job, no place to stay or identification so he could locate employment or a place to live. ICS provided the funds for him to obtain a State Identification Card. On Dec. 13 he not only was hired as a warehouse worker BUT located and moved into his first apartment in Tucson. In another case, a 45-year-old man had been homeless in May but was trying to turn his life around. He had been sober for six months, living with his brother, and attending AA. ICS helped him get an identification card so he could look for work. Unfortunately, he had several outstanding traffic tickets, so he couldn′t drive. ICS helped him get past that obstacle, too, purchasing a $50 bicycle for him. The man says he′ll be back sometime to repay some of what ICS has given him. Please check each program area for more success stories and comments.
