ICS Invites Community to Help Fill the Food Bank Truck for 9/11 Day of Service
In commemoration of the 9/11 National Day of Service, Interfaith Community Services’ Mobile Food Bank truck will visit four ICS faith partner communities around Tucson and collect food donations to fill hungry stomachs in coming months. The Stuff the Truck food drive will be held Saturday and Sunday, September 10 – 11, at five drop-off locations.
The 9/11 Day of Service is an annual event honoring 9/11 heroes who rose up in service in response to the attacks. It is an opportunity for the community to come together, make new connections, and work as one team to benefit others. 9/11 Day of Service was founded by AmeriCorps.
In the spirit of the outpouring of support that followed September 11, 2001, ICS invites all in the community to work together and help address the critical need for food in Southern Arizona.
“Every food donation fulfills an immediate need for an individual or family in crisis,” according to Tom McKinney, CEO of ICS. “Meeting an urgent need for food is the first step in taking families from crisis to stability. And building up individuals ultimately leads to a stronger community.
ICS food banks have seen up to a 50% increase in demand over this time last year. According to Feeding America, one in six Americans relied on food banks last year. Rising food prices continue to stretch the limits of family budgets, and food banks nationwide are expanding services to keep up with growing demand.
ICS food banks accept most food items prior to their expiration date, including non-perishable goods, produce, dairy and packaged meats. The most needed items at this time are peanut butter, canned meats (tuna, chicken and Spam), meals in a can like chili and ravioli, canned pasta sauce and spaghetti noodles.
