Client Success Stories

Finding Steady Work

In early January, Jeannie began working with Workforce Development and secured a job with the University of Arizona’s catering service just three weeks later. With years of experience in hospitality, she had struggled to find steady, year-round employment. Jeannie worked with ICS staff to update her resume, showcasing her skills and experience in the industry. She credited staff and volunteers for giving her the confidence to apply for jobs, prepare for interviews, and navigate technology despite not having access to a computer.

Through their guidance, Jeannie felt ready for her interview and was thrilled to secure a position that offered steady work and great benefits. She was so grateful for the support she received that she even referred a friend to WFD, eager to help others benefit from the same resources.

A Fresh Start

After years of caring for his elderly mother, Gerald sought help from Workforce Development. With no recent work history and limited transportation, he struggled to find a job. However, with a background in security, he secured a position as a security guard at an abandoned hotel in downtown Tucson, where he is responsible for preventing trespassing, ensuring safety, and protecting the property from vandalism. Gerald expressed his gratitude, saying, “I appreciate the help Workforce Development gave me very much! I’m happy to have a job—it’s something I know how to do, and it’s a fairly easy job. You guys are wonderful!

A Journey Back to Work

Gustavo was referred to Workforce Development by the Emergency Financial Assistance Department. With a background in commercial painting, he had been off work for several years due to a back injury. He worked with a WFD volunteer to update his resume, highlighting his skills and experience. Gustavo secured a position with a small painting company and was excited to be back to work. He expressed his gratitude, saying, “I appreciate what you did for me.”

Making a Late-Career Change

Daniel came to the Workforce Development Center with 30 years of experience in different industries and just a month’s worth of rent in his pocket. He had retired early at 50 years old, then went through an ugly divorce that left him with close to nothing. He had to find a job. He made several visits to work with WFD volunteers, and had multiple job interviews, but his anxiety mounted when he still didn’t have an offer. Then he spent four hours practicing mock interviews with superstar volunteer Chuck, which helped him to feel more realistic about his prospective job leads.
ICS also provided Daniel with dress shirts for his new career in sales. He sent a thank-you note in which he wrote: “I will never forget your kindness and your good-hearted assistance… Interfaith Community Services has really helped me out when I needed them most.”

Volunteer Opportunities in Workforce Development

Use your life skills and knowledge to help job seekers take practical steps toward securing their next employment opportunity. You do not need to have been a hiring executive to be a successful volunteer. The ICS Workforce Development team will provide training on resume building and recommend the best websites for assisting clients with job searches. Your personal experience and skills will be invaluable in guiding clients through their employment journey. English-speaking and bilingual Spanish/English volunteers are needed
